Meadow Mushrooms

A classic tale of Kiwi entrepreneurship, Meadow Mushrooms was started in New Zealand in 1970 by friends Philip Burdon and Roger Giles, who shared a spirit for adventure, loved a challenge and had the heart to bring their vision to life through good hard yakka and continual re-investment.

At the time, mushrooms weren’t a huge part of New Zealand’s national cuisine, but the persistent pair successfully introduced Kiwis to this healthy and versatile fungi, elevating mushrooms to the nation’s fourth most popular vegetable by sales.

Now, 50 years on, Meadow Mushrooms remains true to their co-founders’ philosophy of aiming high and continuing to invest in their people, their brand and their operations – and it’s paid off. They’re now New Zealand’s leading mushroom producer, with five sites and a team of nearly 500 people (from Composters, Growers, Harvesters and Packers to Engineers, Quality Control and Support Staff), delivering over 9 million mushrooms every week to supermarkets, fruit & vege stores and foodservice wholesalers & distributors, right across the country.

But, although they’re bigger, they’re still a proudly New Zealand family-owned and operated business. Our belief in ‘family values’ is stronger than ever – albeit across a much larger and culturally diverse ‘extended family’ of employees, with the support of a Board of Directors.
